102 - Learn the Micro Page-to-Page Storytelling

Ground Your Craft

The Ground Your Craft course teaches writers the fundamental structure behind masterful single scenes. And through this descriptive process, Ground Your Craft reveals the secrets behind how master writers create mystery, suspense and dramatic irony to hold audiences rapt page after page.

Each week will feature one of the twelve genres. First you will learn how to identify the core scenes for each of those genres. Then with laser focus, you will learn how to dissect that week's specific masterwork down to its most basic beats. Once the beat-by-beat progression is revealed, you'll learn how to use these masterwork structures to inspire original scene creations. And then you'll put the Story Grid prescription to the test by writing your own scene using the same structure as the masterwork.

Who better to direct the construction of an original work of art than master scene builders at the top of their genres?

Story Grid reveals the architecture of the masters and teaches you how to adapt their approach to create your own work.

The 15-week Summer 2019 Semester begins May 27th.

101 - Learn the Macro Global Storytelling

Level Up Your Craft

The Level Up Your Craft course teaches writers global skeletal structure for medium and longform stories. Level Up Your Craft provides the indispensable lens that will serve you as the final arbiter of whether or not your story works. Or doesn't

As detailed in The Story Grid, fifteen scenes (five from the beginning hook, five from the middle build, and five from the ending payoff) form the backbone of a story that works. Level Up Your Craft focuses an entire week of work on each of these single scenes. It does so by using three masterworks to illustrate the core concepts that define each scene's particular role in the global story's movement.

If you get confused as to why you lose steam in the middle of a project or why feedback you receive tends to point out that the reader eventually lost interest or could no longer suspect his or her disbelief, Level Up Your Craft will give you the insight to pinpoint what's not working in your draft and the tools that show you how to fix it.

Including 15 separate lectures from Shawn Coyne, Level Up Your Craft teaches the Big Picture/Macro fundamentals of storytelling through a deep analysis of three unique masterworks. One from the Love Genre, one from the Action Genre and one from the Thriller Genre.

The 15-week Summer 2019 Semester begins May 27th.

Course Focus

  • Dissects a Love, an Action and a Thriller masterwork into each of its 15 essential scenes.
  • Learn how to create and best apply The Foolscap Global Story Grid.
